History ☆ ☆ ☆

☆ Madeline Elizabeth Harkness was born to Lucas and Grace Harkness on June 18, 1975 in Heritage, Oregon. Her parents were fresh out of high school and not expecting to start a family so early, but they nevertheless welcomed baby Maddie with open arms. Only two years later, brother Benjamin Ashton joined her. Then, three years later, sister Jessica Jo completed the Harkness Kid Army.

☆ Growing up as the first child meant that little Madeline got to help her mother raise her siblings, Benjamin and Jessica Jo. She was excited to take care of babies and delighted to get the chance to help out around the house like a grown up. She never shirked responsibility, even as she got older. The mothering instinct was there in her from an early age, so by the time she was a teenager, there was no changing that. Where other kids might have complained about having to include their younger siblings, Maddie was happy to invite them along. As far as she was concerned, her enjoyment should always be appropriate for little brother Ben and baby sister JJ as well. Otherwise, well, it really wasn't so fun, was it? This meant that Maddie's social status was skewed more toward the nerdy end of the spectrum, but that was okay. She liked band kids and drama geeks more than cheerleaders and football players, anyway. She fit right in as a part of this wiser, more inclusive crowd.

☆ This maternal instinct carried on through college. Her parents were not wealthy enough (at the time) to send any of their children to an out-of-state college, so Madeline went to Whitlinger. She did not view this as 'settling', by any means, and she enjoyed it there for five years - four as an undergrad, one year for a Master's in pre-K education. Later in life, she entertained some thoughts of traveling out of the country for another Master's degree, but she has all but given up due to lack of funds and an inability to choose (either a country or a program)! Sometimes, she envies JJ for getting to live outside of Heritage for a while, but the unhappy ending there has added to her growing belief that happiness is better found in their home town.

☆ After college, Maddie got a job as a teacher's assistant at a small preschool just outside of town. There really wasn't much opportunity for advancement there, because the town and school were so small, but she was happy to stick around and help out for several years. She also took a part-time job as a substitute teacher for the preschool and kindergarten crowd. When she was twenty-seven, a daycare position opened up at Heritage Hospital. This was everything Maddie wanted: a full-time job teaching little children - and she was providing a vital service to people, too. Patients and staff at the hospital could rely on her to watch their kids, keep them entertained and teach them things like colors and shapes. And Miss Maddie is quite popular there.

☆ While working in the hospital, Maddie has had many opportunities to be a part of things. Early on, a woman who was pregnant with twins was all set to deliver and Maddie was able to witness the birth. As someone with a keen interest in children, she thought that it would be a good experience - and, not only that, but being there for a birth was miraculous and unforgettable. However, from this, she also decided that she did not want to ever be pregnant or give birth herself. Not because she is vain or anything like that, but because she doesn't think she can handle it, either physically or mentally.

☆ In 2006, Maddie caught the eye of a very attractive young man who was vacationing in Heritage. His name was Rick D'onofrio. He was a salesman by trade and in town to try and find potential buyers. At the time, he hadn't had much luck. Most people vacationing in the town were not looking to get a new vacuum cleaner, no matter how fancy he claimed it was. However, though the tall, dark and handsome Italian-American failed to procure any new revenue in the tiny town, he won a date with the redheaded Harkness girl. In fact, so taken was he with her that he kept prolonging his stay in town. A year after meeting her and starting their relationship, he proposed and she gleefully said "yes".

☆ Maddie, like a lot of girls, had always dreamed of getting married to her particular Prince Charming. The handsome and mysterious Rick D'onofrio had captured her heart and she was excited to marry him. Perhaps, since he was a tourist and a traveling salesman, she would be able to finally break away from this town. Not that she disliked it, but everyone wants some sense of adventure, don't they? Rick's middle name may well have been Adventure. Since her baby sister Jessie Jo was off having her own adventures in Pennsylvania, she made due with the friends and family that she did have in town - including little brother Benjamin - and she eagerly planned a wedding ceremony with them. A poofy white gown was picked out and the church was decked out accordingly. But it was a wedding that wasn't meant to be, for reasons she will never know or understand. Everyone was standing as Maddie strolled down the aisle, arm in arm with her father, only to find that Rick was not standing there at the end. A mark of sympathy was on everyone's face as she looked around, standing up there at the alter in that ridiculous gown, crying her eyes out. She was embarrassed beyond anything else she'd ever experienced. Never before had she felt so completely, utterly alone. Even as Benjamin and her parents hugged her, she felt betrayed and like all of her dreams had smashed. And she hasn't been the same since. News of Jessie Jo's marriage ending only served to make her feelings about love worsen. Now, as much as she would love to have someone to love and be loved by, she is hesitant to even try. Who's to say it wouldn't happen all over again

Appearance & Personality ☆ ☆ ☆

Madeline Harkness is every bit as sweet and innocent as she looks. And that's fine with her, really. She is not one to do a lot of pretending. If she's inexperienced with something, she will let you know. Modesty and naivete are not bad things to be hidden. In fact, she thinks that they are rare things that deserve some celebration. The world could use a bit more kind dopiness, she believes. As such, she wears her emotions on her shoulder, like a parrot, and is unafraid of letting them show. Even in public, though she would like very much to not draw attention. Not everyone has to look at her at once. It's hard for her feelings to be very well hidden with those large eyes of hers, anyway. Those gain her plenty of attention, no matter what.

Rather than letting her personal heartbreak interfere with the way she lives now, she does her best to just hold her head up high and rise above her past mistakes. She has always been a shy person, and she refuses to let anyone think that it's a new development caused by her ex-fiance. As long as she's not in a highly social situation, with a large group of people paying attention to her (or potentially paying attention to her), she's not afraid to speak her mind. A lot of people see her as 'sweet, mousy Maddie', but she is resolute with the things she believes in, and she won't run away from an argument if it's one worth having.

Growing up as the older daughter meant that Maddie grew up babysitting and helping her parents around the house a lot more often than her baby sister Jessie. Not that she held that against her. Quite the opposite. She loves her little sis and acts very much like a second mother to her, protecting her and dispensing advice - always trying to keep JJ's best interest at heart. It gets hard sometimes, especially when situations arise for Jessie Jo which made Maddie uncomfortable in her own experience. But even then, she tries her best to be strong, supportive and helpful for her sister.

In the yearbook of life, "Most Likely To Be A Mother" would probably be her superlative. And she's okay with that. As long as no one else gets to be "Most Likely To Turn Into a Nighttime Bird of Prey". And which yearbook would have that?

5 Random Facts;
☆ Maddie is obsessed with owls and has been from an early age, because she resembles one. Kids used to tell her so at such a frequency that it just stuck. She likes it. Owls are smart and beautiful.

☆ She is deaf in one ear (the right one) from a fever when she was a baby. She has near perfect hearing in her left ear, though, and just mishears things. She is often amused by it. But that's why she says "What?" a lot.

☆ She could have been valedictorian at her high school graduation, but she declined due to fear of public speaking. She regrets it sometimes, but what can ya do?

☆ She once sat beside Harrison Ford on a flight to LA and completely clammed up. She regrets this, too! Possibly even more!

☆ After the wedding fiasco, she lived with her parents for a brief recovery/mourning period of about a year (she still spends a lot of time with them).
